Send in the clowns!

With their bright red feet and clownish antics, Pigeon Guillemots are an island favorite. They are the only seabird to commonly nest on Whidbey and Camano islands, favoring burrows in our eroding bluffs. They also nest in the old pier at Keystone and the rocky crags of Deception Pass.”

It was fun to team with my good friend, photographer and designer Craig Johnson, on two brochures designed to educate the public about conservation. The Marine Resources Committee (MRC) commissioned us to create “Pigeon Guillemots” to tell the story of an ongoing breeding study of these fascinating birds, conducted jointly by the MRC and Whidbey Audubon Society. I helped write “Backyard Birds” as part of Craig’s mission to teach the public how to maintain a bird feeder that does not spread disease among wild birds.
